A lot of people assume that growth for a company comes down simply to sales. And it’s undeniably true: Revenue sustains our business and makes everything we do possible, but sustainable growth is more than just financial success—it’s a mindset.
There are a lot of clichés about this mindset, but the one that resonates most with me is “Growth happens outside of your comfort zone.” This is an empowering lens to use when I am feeling uneasy with change. It allows me to identify that I am simply outside of my current knowledge set and building a new one. It shifts the energy from flight to fight, knowing that I will be better for powering through the unknown. It helps me tap into the skills I have built, to pursue new ones that will have a broader impact.

So how do you build a growth mindset that will lead to more dollars in the door? Recognize strengths and leverage expertise. Build confidence in what you do well and expand on it. Embrace change, even when it’s uncomfortable. Just because something hasn’t worked before doesn’t mean it can’t work today (the world changes quickly). We destigmatize failure and recognize that we all learn more in one challenging day than we do in six months of smooth sailing.
When we do this, we begin to see problems as new opportunities to come together. That doesn’t mean we break things just to find a shared goal, but it means when they need to be updated, we figure out a path forward, together. The resistance we may feel is from being outside our comfort zone, and that feels different for everyone.
Ultimately, growth is not just about reaching a goal—it’s about the continuous process of learning, adapting, and pushing past our limits. The growth, as they say, is in the journey.
